About two Fridays ago, I was invited to the opening of the second Levetto installation at downtown Toronto. Despite my long days at work, I made the effort to check out Chef Shahir Massoud as his bio includes being a chef at Lupa, one of Mario Batali’s restaurants in NYC. It seems to me if you get schooled with Mario Batali with anything Italian, it should really be good. I came to Levetto at College St opening with my EyeCandyTO business partner, Abe Wornovitzky, hungry with anticipation.

When we arrived at Levetto, one could already see the contrast of the frigid wintry night air with what was inside the restaurant. Through the big glass windows, we saw the party has already started and a crush of people filled up the space. There was a warmth to the interiors, brightly lit and the kitchen in full display, it is about as honest and straightforward as you can go. I love places like that where it is quite obvious that the food you would be getting is true to what it is supposed to be, no more, no less.

Through all the chaos, we managed to see familiar faces among the crowd and we got together with @culinaryadvco ‘s Chef Scot, accompanied by his friend April. Together we got to try several pasta dishes: Pomodoro, Trece, Rigatoni, Tagliatelle and Bucatini. No matter how delicious the sauces were, it was the pasta that was memorable to me. I was amazed of the pasta’s texture. It’s textbook definition of the words al dente! It definitely gave me a lot of satisfaction as I finished every last morsel.

We also had the chance to try Patate, Verde, Soppresata and Salcissia. Of all the varieties that I have tried, the Patate was the that made the most impression to me. Although I must confess that I love potato pizza. The smell of the truffle oil and freshly grated grana padano made it more decadent. It is also worth to mention that I love every bite in that pizza crust. It was buttery and had that beautiful crispy crunch that definitely would make me come back for more.

Thank you for the invitation Chef Shahir! Congratulations for such a successful opening. I definitely think that a lot of other foodies are soon to follow and try out Levetto!
