Top Gun

Kensington market never ceases to amaze me. Each time I go, there is another new discovery to my list. This time around I came to try Top Gun Steak. Right in the heart of Kensington market, you can find this restaurant right by southeast of Nassau and Augusta Sts. Reaching the intersection, I find them right away as they have ample patio space up front. I would easily understand if the space would fill up right away. It is such a good spot for people watching.

Walking in, the space is predominantly partitioned to a partly open kitchen. Opposite the kitchen is a big black board where the menu is displayed. I stood there for a while contemplating what sandwich to go for. I was decided to get two, one for me and another for my friend Diona a.k.a Titaflips. Or maybe we would end up splitting each sandwich and I end up tasting both. That is always a big possibility in Diona’s company. I ended up with The Cheerful – a steak sandwich with cheddar, Top Gun sauce, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions and The Stinger – a steak sandwich with havarti cheese, fried egg, lettuce, tomato and habanero salsa.

As I waited for my order, I had buyer’s remorse when I was reading another item in the menu. I would have loved to try Item #10 Take My Breath Away. No matter how cheesy the name was, that steak sandwich with deep-fried and crusted mozzarella sounded amazing. And it doesn’t end there. It has avocado, pico de gallo and chipotle mayo. Maybe the next time around, I’d be wiser.

It didn’t take long when the cook came around the counter and handed me a brown bag of goodies. Me being curious opened it up right there and then to take the pictures before heading out to see Diona. That is the thing about taking out food, it leaves too little room to make the food pretty. Ah well, I was hungry and I didn’t want to fuss, so I stopped when I got a few pics just for show. I must apologize that I didn’t go beyond like I normally do. The stomach beckoned and refused to be ignored.

Arriving at Kanto, I saw Diona was still busy tending to customers I started with my sandwich without her. I figured she would be swinging by me on and off until the last customer leaves. I was planning to leave her a bite of my sandwich but I ended up finishing the whole thing. I picked out the Cheerful one and I found out that just a bite would not do. The sandwich was juicy, fresh and filling. It was just what I needed.

Diona finally made it to my table a few minutes later and I shamelessly took a bite of her sandwich when she offered for me to taste it. LOL. I was just curious of the difference of the two. The Stinger was definitely richer in taste with the cheese and the egg in it, it was decadent.

That was indeed a good find as I was looking for something that really has weight. I don’t need any more reasons why I should go back to Kensington market, but I seem to find more even when I am not looking.
