Otto’s Berlin Döner

Last year on my way to Barcelona, I made a stop at Frankfurt. I always used to lay-over for a few hours at Frankfurt but last year, I decided to make that lay-over especially long. It gave me enough time to go downtown and browse around the city. And by browsing, I mean trying local food (insert big grin here). One of the things that made an impression with me were countless reviews that I have to try what they call a Curry Wurst. Of course I did just that and what is not to love about really delicious German sausage swimming in a curry ketchup-like sauce? I only remembered the experience when I relived the experience here in Toronto. I got to try it again at Otto’s Berlin Döner.

Another great addition to the Kensington market, you can easily find it at Augusta and College. The funny thing is that most reviews that you would find reviews about their döner. One of the most popular street foods at Berlin, it is seasoned meat roasted in a vertical spit, then thinly sliced and wrapped in flat bread with vegetable toppings and, sometimes, a spicy sauce. But for my first visit, I didn’t go for their best item in their menu. I was more interested in recreating my Frankfurt experience.

So I walked in a bustling restaurant, their patio table area full of people out and about just like me, enjoying the unusually mild weather. After putting my order for Currywurst, a Bratwurst with a side of fries, I took one of the tables by the open big window and waited. When it finally arrived, I got a hefty sausage with a generous side of fries. After the standard round of photography, I dug in and the sausage was hearty. Much more refined than the one I enjoyed in the streets of Frankfurt, the Bratwurst was indeed delicious. I looked around and I was thinking, I should have paired the Currywurst with a beer and not my standard Diet Coke. It was interesting that they have a good selection of beers on tap and even ciders. Definitely something to think about for that second visit.

Patio season should be extended. I think the next time, I should try their döner and have a pint of beer. As if I need another reason to come to Kensington market. :)
